Summary and Next Steps

Introductions followed by a brief overview of the National Fish Habitat Initiative and progress of the Kenai PENINSULA fish habitat partnership to date including: Letter to national board requesting candidacy; Partnership Name; Geographic Area defined; Purpose, Mission and Vision described. Brainstorm threats and opportunities for Kenai Peninsula Fish Habitat and the partnership. Discussion and agreement on grouping the threats and opportunities into six focal areas for the purposes of setting goals. The six focal areas for goal development were described as follows:

1) Bio-complexity – structure and function
2) Water – quantity and quality
3) Assessment – inventory, research, monitoring, evaluation
4) Education – habitat/salmon literacy; links between environment and economy
5) Policy – gaps in regs; growth policies
6) Partnership – capacity, governance, membership

It was agreed by consensus that the organizing committee, plus anyone else wanting to participate, would develop a goal statement under each of the six focal areas. The goals would set the stage for objectives and strategies that would address the threats and opportunities while also advancing the purpose, vision and mission of the partnership and the national initiative. The committee will work on the six focal areas and bring a work product back to a public meeting on Jan. 30th for discussion.
